United Telephone Company is deploying a fiber-rich network based on the Optical Solutions FiberPath Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) platform.
Chapel Hill, Tenn.-based United Telephony operates 16,000 access lines, but is initially using FiberPath in four new subdivisions that pass about 2,000 homes to deliver IP services, including video. The telco has been running fiber to a remote node to deliver ADSL and VDSL services, but expects to eliminate the need for active nodes in the network, thanks to the new PON system.
Optical Solutions said United Telephone marks the 24th customer to power an IPTV service with the FiberPath platform.
