Roomba vacuums from iRobot will receive an update later in January that allows them to map indoor areas according to their Wi-Fi signals. Via a report from TechCrunch, the map exists alongside the existing Clean Map functionality. It isn’t intended to help the robot clean per se, but rather to provide more information about the home’s wireless service and mark dead spots where the Roomba or other devices may not be able to use its full range of internet-connected senses.
The WiFi Signal Strength mapping app could be particularly useful for users who have or are in the process of linking up smart home devices, or simply spotting places where their existing router doesn’t quite reach.
As of now, the app will only be available in the United States and on the latest model of vacuum, the Roomba 900.
CEO Gary Hall emphasized to TechCrunch that iRobot is not in the business of selling private data, although the company was reported to have considered the option in July.
