SureWest Communications is adding to its Internet Protocol gear, tapping Cisco Systems Inc.’s IP Next Generation Network product line to power its Sacramento, Calif. fiber-to-the-home services.
SureWest now delivers more than 250 video and music channels, 10 Megabit-per-second to 20 Mbps Internet connections and voice services to 18,000 subscribers, and it is adding about 480 new subscribers monthly.
Cisco’s IP NGN technology including Catalyst 4500 and 6500-series switches will give the FTTH operator the ability to scale as the subscriber numbers rise, according to Bill DeMuth, SureWest’s vice president and chief technology officer.
“Using advanced technology to deliver these services over a single IP-based network lets us grow quickly and cost-effectively,” he said, in a release. “Having an open-architected, standards-based solution that enables us to supply reliable, flexible and scalable services is critical, and Cisco meets that need.”
