Telstra, which is Australia’s largest telecommunications service provider, has given a boost to in-home Wi-Fi speeds with a new gateway from Netgear.
By using 802.11ac, DOCSIS 3.0 and Netgear’s Beamforming+ technology, Netgear said its work with Telstra boosted home network Wi-Fi speeds up to three times faster than previous speeds.
Telstra is using Netgear’s DOCSIS 3.0 AC1900 Cable Data Gateway (C6300BD) for its new Telstra Gateway Max.
Instead of broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal to a wide area, Netgear’s Beamforming+ technology focuses the router’s Wi-Fi signal directly to each device, which provides stronger and faster wireless connections to smartphones, tablets and game consoles.
Netgear’s technology also includes “implicit Beamforming,” which enables the technology to be supported on older devices that don’t have Beamforming capabilities built in.
“Service providers are adopting new strategies to deliver products that meet customer needs for speedy and reliable in-home coverage,” said Sridhar Gollapudi, vice president of product marketing for the Netgear service provider business Unit. “To meet that goal, Netgear is pleased to team with Telstra to offer the first 802.11ac 1900 Mbps cable gateway available in the world. The C6300BD puts Telstra customers in the Wi-Fi fast lane and lets them do more with the connected devices in their home.”
The C6300BD also has high power amplifiers and an advanced antennae design to help extend Wi-Fi coverage. It also comes equipped with integrated 4-port Gigabit Ethernet switch and USB 2.0 ports provide In addition to multi-channel DOCSIS 3.0 bonding, the gateway has an additional Gigabit Ethernet WAN connectivity port for flexible WAN connectivity options.
“With more customers relying on Wi-Fi to connect up portable devices like laptops, smartphones and tablets to the Internet, Wi-Fi quality has never been so important,” said Telstra Director of Connected Home, Alan Crouch. “The world’s first Telstra Gateway Max puts our customers at the forefront of in-home Wi-Fi technology and gives improved broadband reach and quality throughout the home with the introduction of the latest ‘AC’ Wi-Fi standard and ultra-fast 1900 Mbps Wi-Fi speeds.
“These gateways are the first in a range that will be compatible with the Telstra Wi-Fi Network. If you have one of these new gateways you’ll be able to update the software next year to join the Telstra Wi-Fi community.”
