While participating in many musical ensembles over the years, it was common to see percussionists continually air-drumming their parts, committing every motion to memory. The musicians would drum to the internal measures progressing in their heads, intensely swinging their arms in various directions. To those not in the percussion section, their movements seemed like sporadic arm flails, but the drummers knew each flick of the wrist was vital to the song playing in their minds.
The Freedrum is a device that brings silent air-drumming into the realm of sound. You’ll be able to play a virtual drum kit at any location in the world by simply slipping on a pair of motion-sensitive sensors onto each drumstick. You also can slip an additional pair of sensors onto your feet to get the entire musical experience. Once the sensors pair via Bluetooth to your smartphone, you’re ready to start drumming away!
The sensors detect motion by utilizing internal gyroscopes. The detected force is translated into MIDI, and that signal is sent via Bluetooth to a connected smartphone app, playing a drum sound through your headphones or speakers. An internet connection isn’t required because these sensors are battery powered, running for about seven hours on a single charge.
The creators of Freedrum understood that the sensors needed extra fortification to accommodate passionate drumming styles. Shock-resistant ABS plastic enclosures ensure the device is both lightweight and strong. The design has a minimal number of parts, creating an easy repair process. An LED is located right above the single power button, indicating both the connection and battery level.
