If you suffer from occasional indecision, choosing the color of your next car can be a long and arduous process. Well, thanks to the Lexus LIT IS sedan, you can avoid this choice entirely by suiting your car with over 40,000 programmable LEDs for an ever-changing display.
This car is the product of a collaboration between Lexus and music video company Vevo, recently debuting the design in a new music video for the hit song “Be the One” by UK artist Dua Lipa. The vehicle’s crazy displays might make you wonder if it’s just a product of special effects, but this automotive light show is the real deal. According to Lexus, “The custom car produces 175,000 lumens when fully illuminated, and the LED strips, if placed end-to-end, would stretch half a mile in length.”
In order to interact with people, music, and its environment, the car is programmed with three distinct modes. In gesture mode, a person can change the swirling LED animations by using simple hand motions by means of a gaming console. Attract mode loops colorful graphics that accentuate the powerful design and style of the LIT IS sedan. Finally, there’s music viz mode, where the current song playing through the car’s radio manipulates the mesmerizing LED show.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this car is suitable for your everyday life. Even though it would be groovy to look at on your commute home from work, it does present a major roadway distraction. The LIT IS also requires 5,280 ft. of wire to connect all the LEDs together, which definitely cements its status as impractical.
