My holiday shopping is officially complete, thanks to this Robot Chef. Every single person on my list will appreciate this gift that just keeps on giving.
Moley Robotics, a London-based company, has developed a prototype “robochef” designed specifically for the home.
The idea is this: after a long day at the office, you come home to your handy robotic assistant that will cut your preparing and cooking time down significantly. Instead of stopping for take-out on your way home from the office, instead you can turn to Robochef for a helping hand (literally).
Unveiled at Germany’s Hannover Messe technology fair, the machine consists of two dexterous robotic arms installed atop a cooking area, complete with hobs, a sink, and an oven. I mean, really, what more could you possibly ask for?
The robot’s fully articulated hands were created by Shadow Robot Company, whose products are used all over the world (even by NASA).
And, the way the system actually works is rather interesting. First, it records human actions in 3D, then converts the actions into precise movements. The prototype was trained by chef Tim Anderson, who spent time whipping up original dishes in a motion-capture studio. The best part? The robochef doesn’t only cook — it can do anything from a prep work to completing an entire dish.
The consumer version, which Moley hopes to bring to market by 2017, will have additional features, such as a library of thousands of recipes, a dishwasher, and a refrigerator. #MindBlown
So now, not only will you be freed from cooking or prepping meals, you won’t even be bothered with clean up. Running late and need dinner ready when you walk through the door? No problem. The robochef can be controlled remotely using the accompanying app.
Eventually the company hopes to design a version with cameras, so users can actually teach the robot how to create their own favorite dishes. Another eventual add-on? More sensors so the robot knows when to stop stirring and/or whisking to prevent splashes or spills.
The only downfall? You’ll need to start saving now, as the robochef will run you about $15,000 to start.
