Time Warner Cable is planning on spending more than $5 million this year to expand its broadband network in dozens of communities across Maine.
The Maine build-out is one element of a larger $100 million investment by Time Warner Cable this year in its markets throughout New England, New York and the Carolinas.
By the end of the year, more than 3,000 additional homes and businesses in Maine will have access to Time Warner Cable’s hybrid fiber-optic network.
“We’re continuing to invest in our network to deliver more value for our customers and expand critical access to broadband in Maine,” said Paul Schonewolf, area vice president of operations for Time Warner Cable of New England. “Expanding our network will open up new opportunities for local businesses to reach markets across the globe and meet the demands of today’s broadband home, where people are using multiple devices to stream video and music, play games online, upload photos and download movies.”
Expansion projects include:
- 25 miles of new broadband network in Hiram and Porter
- Completion of a downtown Bangor fiber-optic network connecting more than 350 buildings
- Seven miles of new broadband along Routes 1 and 3 in Orland and eight miles in Ellsworth along Route 1A
- Nine miles of new broadband from St. Agatha to the village of Sinclair
- Extended broadband network to more than 650 commercial buildings in Portland.
In all, Time Warner Cable said it plans on adding more than 150 miles to its 12,000-mile network of hybrid fiber-optic coaxial cable in Maine this year.
“This investment by Time Warner Cable will directly help our job creators gain access to one of the most critical tools needed to expand, compete and create new jobs in Maine,” said George Gervais, commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development.
Completed and planned expansions also include areas of Alna, Arundel, Augusta, Belgrade, Biddeford, Brewer, Canaan, Cumberland, East Machias, Gardiner, Grand Isle, Greene, Hallowell, Hartland, Hollis, Kennebunkport, Lewiston, Limington, Lincoln, Lubec, Mapleton, Monmouth, Mount Desert, Naples, Orrington, Oxford, Richmond, Surry, Turner, Vassalboro, Wales, Waterboro, Westbrook, Windham, Wiscasset and Woodstock.
Time Warner Cable said it is the largest cable telecommunications provider in Maine, serving more than 360,000 customers with advanced video, Internet and phone services.
