Turtle Gains 3D Printed Jaw; RV Cockpit Redesigned

May 18, 2015 By Megan Crouse, Real Time Digital Reporter

This morning’s roundup is all about small technologies that make a big difference. A tiny 3D-printed jaw brings an injured turtle back to health, and a wooden bicycle frame may look old-fashioned, but is teaching today’s architects about durable wooden buildings.

BMW is 3D printing water pump wheels for its racers for German Touring Car Masters (DTM) and Z4 GT3 customer cars, and Liberty Coach RVs will have a new cockpit design in 2015 models. The new cockpit is built around the most comfortable possible viewing of one critical component – an iPad used for navigation.

Architects Designed Wooden Bicycle Frame to Explore Structural Engineering

Wooden bikes may be beautiful, but they’re also a tad impractical. Nevertheless, there may be unexpected value in wooden bike frames, which architects can use to understand important structural challenges and prototype new designs. Architects Martino Hutz, Atanas Zhelev and Mariya Korolova built this wood-framed bike not so that they could ride it, but to study how thin wooden sheets can be used to build stronger buildings …

Injured turtle saved, given new jaw thanks to 3D printing technology

In Turkey, a sea turtle struck by tragedy when a boat propeller hacked off a part of its jaw has a new claim to life thanks to a 3D printed beak courtesy of technology firm BTech Innovation and the veterinarians responsible for completing the procedure. With significant damage to its lower and upper jaws, a Turkish animal rescue team found the sea turtle floating in the ocean and nearly dead …
