Comcast will add Paramount Pictures’ library of films into its online digital store this month.
The Paramount library is the latest addition to Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand electronic video store, which made its debut in November of last year. By selling video content directly to its subscribers via their set-top boxes or browsers, Comcast is competing against the likes of Apple’s iTunes and Amazon.com Inc.’s Instant Video Store services.
In some cases, the online store gives Comcast the ability to sell TV shows and movies several weeks ahead of DVD and Blu-ray release dates. Other content providers include Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, and MGM; as well as four mid-major/independent studios: A24, Relativity, Starz, and Vertical Entertainment.
Paramount titles available for purchase on the Xfinity On Demand store this December will include fan favorites such as: “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Noah,” “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” “Labor Day,” “Anchorman 2,” “World War Z,” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness.”
“In just over a year since its launch, the Xfinity Digital Store has continued to grow and we’re seeing more of our customers building their movie and TV show collections,” wrote Comcast’s Nancy Spears, vice president, digital media distribution and monetization, in a company blog. “In fact, 42 percent of customers who own a movie or TV show on Xfinity own more than one. And on average, they own at least two movies and/or four or five TV episodes. As one of the top digital retailers of new release movies in the country, our customers’ desire for convenience and simplicity when purchasing and viewing digital content has never been greater.
