Distractions are lurking around every corner, especially when you’re behind the wheel. Perhaps you’re passionately singing along to the current song blasting through the radio, or maybe you’re locked into a heated Bluetooth conversation with your friend. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s hard to catch every single road sign that zooms past your windshield.
The Volkswagen Sign Assist system ensures you’re always informed by flashing an image of the most recent roadway sign on the vehicle’s center console or head-up display (HUD). In order to capture each photo, the system uses a high-tech, forward-facing camera. The system also includes rain sensors when weather-related circumstances reduce visibility.
To ensure you’re receiving accurate information, the device has a built-in reference structure to eliminate false reports. Sign Assist cross-references the camera, navigation, and current vehicle data before displaying an image. This means that if you’re in a residential area and the system captures an inaccurate highway-caliber speed limit, it will not show the incorrect information to the driver.
The Sign Assist system will be available on a select few Volkswagen vehicles in the near future. Check out how the technology works in the video below.
