If you’ve always dreamed of working for Google, but didn’t quite have the technical skills they were looking for, this might be your big opportunity. The $460 billion is looking to hire operators on 12 to 24 months contracts for the self-driving vehicles in Phoenix, AZ.
You would be responsible for operating the vehicle six to eight hours per day for five days a week in small groups. But before you think you can just kick back and enjoy the ride, the operators are required to monitor up to four communication channels of varying technical degrees at the same time. Plus, you better hope your communication skills are up to par because you’ll be providing written and oral reports to the Google engineers back at the lab. On top of your reports, you’ll document daily procedures and test and you might be gone for up to a month at a time.
You would be making $20 an hour driving the Google Lexus autonomous vehicles, according to AZ Central. You’ll work in teams so you’ll site behind the wheel in case of emergency and also in the passenger seat taking notes.
According to Brian Torcellini, head of operations for Google’s Self-Driving Car testing program, they aren’t looking for any particular background just someone who pays close attention to roads and details. (Also, I would assume they’re looking for someone who can be stuck in a car for 40 hours a week without going bonkers. I will not be applying.)
If you’re still feeling good about it, the list of requirements goes on. You’ll need to have a BA or BS, be able to type at least 40 words per minute and have a clean driving history. And don’t go thinking you can brag about your findings to anyone, all project details must be kept confidential.
