The team from Boston Dynamics has released impressive footage of Atlas, their humanoid robot. A short clip shows the robot jumping on top of a series of boxes, each increasing in size. To end the demonstration in style, Atlas completes a backflip off the highest box onto an elevated platform.
Dubbed as “The World’s Most Dynamic Humanoid” by its designers, the robot uses balance and whole-body skills to perform two-handed mobile manipulation. Weight and space are reduced by using 3D printing. This creates a compact design with a high strength-to-weight ratio.
“Stereo vision, range sensing, and other sensors give Atlas the ability to manipulate objects in its environment and to travel on rough terrain. Atlas keeps its balance when jostled or pushed and can get up if it tips over,” according to Boston Dynamics.
The robot currently stands at 1.5 meters (4.9 feet), weighs 79 kg (174.2 pounds), and can handle a payload of 11 kg (24.3 pounds). The design is also battery powered, uses hydraulic actuation, and has 28 joints of freedom.
