Windstream is changing up the technology for its Kinetic TV service. Windstream announced plans to power its TV service with the app-based MobiTV Connect platform, replacing the service provider’s legacy video delivery system.
The channel lineup and price of Windstream’s TV service will remain the same, with the MobiTV-backed service acting as “a direct replacement” for the company’s current pay TV offering, Geoff Levy, Windstream’s SVP of marketing, told Telecompetitor.
Customers can download the app and watch on-demand, live TV, and DVR via connected devices including TVs, tablets, and iOS and Android mobile phones. The MobiTV platform supports capabilities including 4K/HEVC, cloud DVR, replay TV, and voice control.
The new service will roll out first in select Windstream markets in North Georgia, followed by areas in the company’s Lincoln, Neb., footprint. Windstream expects the new version of Kinetic TV will be available across the company’s 18-state service footprint by the end of the year.
“The future of entertainment for consumers is all about access,” said Jeff Small, president of consumer and small and medium business services for Windstream, in a statement. “Kinetic TV combines access to popular movies and shows with the flexibility to watch on a variety of devices, at any time, at home or on the go, and at lower cost than traditional cable. It’s the perfect complement to Windstream Kinetic Internet.”
