In addition to meeting traditionally tough automotive specs, some newer automotive applications require IS26262 safety certification. For magnetic position sensing applications, ams AS5170 (8-pin SOIC package) and AS5171 (System-in-Package (SiP) format) sensors were specifically developed as Safety Element out of Context (SEooC) devices, as defined in the ISO26262 functional safety standard. Both are available with either a digital or analog output.
Providing full data path diagnostics, the diagnostic system built into the sensors tests the entire device, from the Hall sensor front end, through the DSP engine to the back-end interfaces and pins. With the DSP engine, the magnetic field strength measurements are converted into sine and cosine vectors. The SiP design of the AS5171 provides space savings and potentially lower system cost.
