Everybody complains about the weather
A startup called Climacell talked about its real-time weather prediction technology that it claims can be accurate for microenvironments of a few hundred feet in diameter for what weather to expect in, say, the next 20 minutes. This sort of accurate weather forecast will be particularly helpful for autonomous vehicles that would like to know whether they will be driving into a torrential rain cell within the next few minutes. To get super-predictions like this, Climacell partners with cellular phone services and uses data about how their back-haul cellular signals are propagating. Moisture and other environmental conditions affect the propagation of such signals in ways that are well understood, Climacell says. The resulting propagation data helps make for accurate weather forecasts covering small areas. Climacell is also working with other firms in the IoT space to get additional propagation data to greatly boost the area it can cover with its service.
