PODCAST Dr. Marie Johnson: Innovator for and from the heart

August 21, 2017 By Aimee Kalnoskas 1 Comment

It’s called the widow maker for a reason as Dr. Marie Johnson experienced when her 41-year old, seemingly healthy husband died suddenly from Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) — the number one killer among both men and women. And predicting a heart attack using standard risk factors is generally insufficient.

Learn how Dr. Johnson went from tragedy to innovation to launching AUM Cardiovascular with CADense, a non-invasive acoustic and ECG device designed to help physicians detect physiological and pathological heart murmurs.

The CADense System: Eight minutes of patient data is collected using the Handheld and Booklet Guide. Data is uploaded to a tablet and analyzed. Results are available on the tablet and sent to a centralized email address for immediate and longer-term assessment and record keeping. Using ear buds, the sound data files can be reviewed directly on the tablet. Reports can be uploaded to electronic health record or printed for patient chart.

This was a super interesting interview! Dr. Marie Johnson is such an inspiration and her product fills such an urgent need. In addition to her poignant story about how the loss of her husband spurred her ingenuity, I especially enjoyed hearing about her insights about being a female in a male-dominated field in her early career. Great job, thanks for the podcast!
