When a relay is more than a relay
Analog Devices made headlines with their announcement of the first RF MEMS switch designed to replace the 100-year old electromechanical relay designs. The first in a new product series, ADI’s ADGM1304 and ADGM1004 RF MEMS switches are 95 percent smaller, 30 times faster, 10 times more reliable, and use 10 times less power than conventional electromechanical relays. And the device appears to hit the upper limit of actuation lifetime. “The switches are guaranteed to a minimum of 1 billion actuation cycles,” says Padraig McDaid, Marketing manager for the Linear and Precision Technology Group. ” This far exceeds any mechanical relay on the market today, which would typically be rated below 10 million cycles.”
